Spain eye a final berth

The Spanish women's rugby side look set for a place in the final of the European Trophy after they defeated the favourites France A in round two of the competition.

The FIRA organised event sees eight of Europe's developing teams compete for the title.

There were also second round wins for Italy and Sweden.

In pool one Spain overcame the host nation France A on a 22-5 scoreline outscoring their more fancied opponents four tries to one. After defeating a strong Netherlands team over the weekend, Spain now just need to see off Belgium which they should do with ease for a place in the final. In the other game in pool one, Netherlands put their first round defeat behind them with a comprehensive 74-0 hammering of Belgium.

Whatever happens in the final game of this pool between France A and Netherlands will mean little if Spain overcome Belgium.

Who they will face in the final is less clear after Italy and Sweden both won their second games of the competition. Italy overcame Russia 33-0 and Sweden beat Germany 29-0. Those results set up a cracking final game in this pool with both Italy and Sweden vying for a spot in the final.

For both sides, a win would prove a massive boost. Italy came into this competition on the back of a solid 6 Nations campaign where they finished fifth after beating Wales and drawing with Scotland, while Sweden's season has really only just begun as they prepare for the World Cup this summer. That tie will be the pick of the games on Wednesday.
