Elgon Cup battle resumes this weekend

The women’s rugby nations of Kenya and Uganda go head to head this weekend to battle for the Elgon Cup.

The annual two-test series will be played on a home and away basis and with Kenya winning the most recent battle between the neighbours, Uganda’s Lady Cranes will be out for revenge.

The two sides will play as a curtain raiser to the men’s Elgon Cup and on home soil, Uganda will be tough to beat as they have never lost to the Kenyans on their own turf.

Last time out Kenya took the spoils 8-0 with Uganda showing strongly at set-piece time and the Kenyans impressive out wide, but there is never much to choose between these two sides who struggle to play different teams due to resources and finance.

Uganda will also go into the two-test competition with a new coach with the former men’s national coach Edward Owor recently appointed.

Owor, the Rugby Cranes’ manager in 2003 and 2004, was appointed the women team’s manager replacing Immy Mudoola.

According to country manager Jacob Bukenya, Owor has a one-year appointment subject to renewal based on performance.

“We looked at his experience, involvement in rugby, respect he commands and felt it fit for him to take on that team,” Bukenya said.

Owor will be tasked to improve on the players’ relationship with the union and improve the team’s performance.

He is a former Kampala rugby club vice chairman and one of the founders of super 8 rugby league club G4S Pirates.
