The Kenya women’s rugby side retained the Elgon Cup at the weekend after an exciting 16-8 win over Uganda's Lady Cranes.
The victory was enough to secure a title for Kenya on an aggregate of 21-16 over the two-legged series.
Uganda were lucky to be at the game at all as the bus they were travelling in to Nairobi for the match crashed. The incident occurred at Kitigoma when the bus driver tried to avoid a head on collision with another vehicle on the Kampala - Jinja highway.
It was Uganda who opened the scoring when Christine Kizito put over a penalty on nine minutes after a Kenyan infringement. Sammy Kemmey's troops however soon settled into the game with their growing dominance eventually earning them a penalty for a high tackle on thirty minutes .
Angela Olum was sure with her kick, levelling the scores before half time.
Stacy Awuor gave Kenya the lead two minutes after resuming the second half. Olum missed this conversion with the scoreboard reading 8-3 in Kenya's favour. Philadelphia Olando ensured Kenya pushed the home team’s lead out further though when she touched down on fifty two minutes after Awour’s great break. Olum again missed the conversion but Kenya led by 10.
Uganda were not going down without a fight however with second half substitute Emanuella Oroma's try reducing the deficit to 13-8 before Doreen Remuor's penalty took Kenya's scores to 16-8.
Awour was named player of the match.
