Invitational 7s team, The Moody Cows, have named Macmillan Cancer Support has as their official chosen charity.
The team features regular International players and this summer England star Maggie Alphonsi and Canada 7s captain Mandy Marchak will be part of their squad taking part in various competitions.
Former player and founding member of the Moody Cows, Kay Booker, 39, sadly lost her brave battle against cancer in July 2009 and with Macmillan Cancer Support playing a role in supporting Kay during her illness there was strong motivation for the Moody Cows fundraising efforts.
Moody Cows Captain Lou Micklewright (pictured) commented “So many members of the Moody Cows squad have been affected by cancer, with the loss of family, friends and loved ones. Affiliating officially with Macmillan Cancer Support gives us a great opportunity to give something back to a charity that does so much fantastic work”.
The team travels to tournaments all over the UK and as far afield as Stockholm and Dubai, and they will now wear the famous green Macmillan logo to go alongside their well know Friesian print. Rachel Kingston, London Area Fundraising Manager at Macmillan spoke of the recent appointment: “We are delighted that the Moody Cows have chosen Macmillan as their official charity. It is fantastic that the team will be raising money to help people affected by cancer at the same time as playing the game they love.”
As part of the Moody Cows commitment to raising money for Macmillan, the squad are holding their Annual Fundraiser on Saturday 7 May at Cheshunt Rugby Club in Hertfordshire, where they will blow the pre-season cobwebs away with a few games of 7s rugby, a BBQ, DJ and a prize draw raffle. Throughout the coming year the players will also give up their time to volunteer at Macmillan Cancer Support events as well as entering events to raise more money for this amazing charity.
On June 19tha team of 12 will cycle the 86km from Clapham Common in London to the sunny seaside town of Brighton. Moody Cows Manager, Lou Stewart, spoke of the pride the girls are taking in raising money for Macmillan, “It is a fitting tribute that so many of the Moody Cows are actively using their passion for rugby to raise money for a charity close to our heart”.
The Moody Cows have set up a Macmillan tribute page where all donations are made and where supporters can follow their fundraising efforts. http://macmillan.tributefunds.com/fund/Moody+Cows
