Papua New Guinea win women's title

In the second annual Asia Pacific Women’s Rugby Sevens, Papua New Guinea claimed its first title with a 24-10 win over China.

The Asia-Pacific Sevens bring together some of the best teams in the two regions. Current champions Kazakhstan were absent, as were Pacific Games champions Fiji, but the eight teams that did line up on Friday included Pacific Games finalists Samoa, China, Hong Kong and last year's runner-up, Papua New Guinea.

A hat-trick from Joanna Lagona secured a first APWS title for PNG, having lost to Kazakhstan in last year's final.

Samoa, whose only defeat in the tournament was at the hands of Papua New Guinea in the semi finals, beat Hong Kong 17-5 to take the bronze medal. Singapore edged Cook Islands 7-5 to claim the Plate.
