Acheson backs East Anglian 7s

Bury rugby club have had a  contact ladies side for 3 years and last year saw the first ever ladies tournament at the 7s.   Since then England women won the Rugby World Cup and the sport has gained even more followers worldwide.  In recognition to this Bury have decided to increase the ladies competition again this year, welcoming teams  from all around the county and beyond.

Mike Robinson, Chairman of Bury Rugby Club says “ More than 1800 women and girls play rugby regularly in England;  at Bury we believe it is important to grow this  side of  rugby and as such we have girls from age 5 – senior playing.  Our ladies team The Foxes have played their first season in a league this year.  We are very much looking forward to a fantastic ladies competition at the 7s on the 3rdMay.”

Sasha Acheson, from Lawshall and ex Sudbury player, by age 23 had 5 caps for England will be attending the 7s.

Sasha says “"I am very excited about being invited to Bury St Edmunds to represent Women's Rugby at this fantastic and prestigious event.

With the tournament growing to having a stage for women to play is another huge testament in which rugby in this area is growing. Successes like this aren't given, they are earned each and every day, from the people who work behind the scenes and put in all the hours, to the athletes on the rugby pitch.

It was 9 years ago that I remember running around the top pitches in summer fitness at Bury rugby club, and to be able to come and celebrate the team play in such a renowned tournament will be an absolute pleasure.

Women's rugby is by no means at it's finished article, it is a sport that is growing in every way. Rugby is not a sport of comparison, it is a sport that celebrates the inclusion of each and every person and player, with no boundaries to what anyone can achieve, the sky is absolutely the limit.

I can't wait to come back to where I have grown up and watch rugby at it's heart, in town clubs hosting a huge tournament. This is a sport which is played from the heart and bonds so many, like the small town of bury, but small towns are destined for great things, as this tournament is testament too, with a showcase of talent from men and women's rugby alike.

This is a huge stepping stone of things to come for women's rugby in Bury St Edmunds, and it will be a real honour to witness a brilliant team pave the way for things to come."
