Australia win tight series

The series was played over three games during breaks in the IRB men’s Sevens World Series at Gold Coast in Queensland (where the 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held).

Game one, on Saturday morning, set the tone for the series. Australia took an early lead but Canada pulled level before half-time, before going on to win 17-12.

In Game two in the afternoon, Canada made six changes, and initially went 12-0 down before coming back strongly, narrowly losing by the same score as they had won the opening game.

The final decider was on Sunday and proved to be a classic. From the opening play Canada’s Kayla Moleschi seemed certain to score before Shannon Parry made a brilliant try saving tackle.

Australia then seized the initiative to go 5-0 up with a try from Alicia Quirk. Ghislaine Landry levelled the score, but Australia finished the half after a well worked move from Shannon Parry broke the Canadian line, allowing Charlotte Caslick to score under the posts.

Bianca Farella pulled Canada back into the game midway through the second half, before a great team try Mandy Marchak put Canada 15-12 ahead with two minutes left. Canada held out until the final play, but a 75-metre run by Australia’s flying winger Ellia Green allowed Australia to take the game 17-15 and bring the crowd to its feet to applaud a great exhibition of women’s sevens.
