European 7s draw announced

Russia, champions in 2014 (Rugby Europe/Neil Kennedy)

Thirty-six teams will take part in the women’s series, with the top 12 teams taking part in a two-tournament series. Russia are the reigning champions, having also won in 2013.

As in previous years the top two teams in Divisions A and B will be promoted for 2016, while the bottom two in the Grand Prix and Division A will be relegated. Last year Sweden and Belgium were relegated from the Grand Prix, and replaced by Scotland and the Ukraine. In Division B Lithuania and Hungary were promoted, with Denmark and Croatia stepping down from Division A in their place.

The significance of this year event is enhanced its role in the Olympic qualification process, with the winner of the three-tournaments Grand Prix Series guaranteed a place in the 2016 Olympic final line-up and the runner-up qualified for Final Olympic qualifying tournament. The final two European places will be decided at a tournament in July.

Rugby Europe have also published the draw for the Under-18 Championship, which was won by England last year, and which will be held this year in Leige in Belgium.
