Farah Palmer: Week 5

Stelle Uren of Canterbury scores a try in the tackle of Pippa Andrews of Tasman at AMI Stadium (John Davidson/Photosport).

Unsurprisingly all of the games were won by teams from the Premiership, though Championship leaders Bay of Plenty push Premiership basement team Waikato all the way, going down just 19-17.

Other than that there were big wins across the board. Canterbury, competing for the Premiership leadership, thumped Tasman 67-12 win, taking them to within three points of leaders Counties Manukau, who had the day off (they would have gone top but for a rule that gives Premiership teams five points for a bye during crossover rounds).

Manuwatu did even better, running in 13 tries against Hawke’s Bay, Janna Vaughan and Selica Winiata both scoring hat-tricks, as they won 86-8. Indeed the score could have been even bigger had not the referee called the match off early on safety grounds, Hawke’s Bay by that time being down to just 13 fit players.

It was a result that also keeps Manuwatu behind two points of Auckland, who hung onto fourth and final semi-final spot after a 37-5 win at North Harbour, level with Wellington who saw off a spirited Otago 41-19

The final two weeks will return to all Premiership and all Championship games. Counties Manukau still have two tough games left against Wellington and Manawatu and may need to win both to confirm top spot. Canterbury have yet to play Wellington also, and Waikato. Wellington and Auckland share third place with Manawatu and Waikato only two points behind.

In the Championship, Bay of Plenty look to have a place In the final sewn up, despite having only one game left, as they are now eight points clear of Otago at the top, and 14 points ahead of third placed North Harbour.
