Mexico qualify for Challenger Series

Mexico are again the Rugby Americas North sevens champions.

With the region's two top level teams absent (USA and Canada only take part when they need to qualify for a another competition, such as a World Cup or Olympics), Mexico were the favourites to lift the title having every regional title where the big two have been absent since 2014.

And lived up to that billing despite Jamaica pushing them all the way in the final.

Six teams took part in what turned out to be a storm-swept three-day tournament in Arima, Trinidad - though one of these was the local "B" team who nonetheless surprised man by ending fifth after losing every pool game, beating Barbados in the positional play-off.

Trinidad's "A" team took third ahead of Dominican Republic, only missing out on a place in the final due to losing 12-10 to their great rivals, Jamaica.

That result out Jamaica in the final, a place that was deserved as they were the only team to score against Mexico in the pool stage.

And it took a last-play try in the final for Mexico's "Serpientes" to become the Champions with a 19-12 victory that matched the scoreline from the pool stage.

As a result Mexico will return to the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger in 2025, as also qualify for the Junior Panam Sports Games taking place next year in Ashnción, Paraguay.
