New Zealand take Atlanta title.

Cup:Quarter-finals

Game of the quarter-final round was England against Australia - a tight, tense battle with Australia only coming out on top with a Sharni Williams try at the end of extra time. Elsewhere Canada reinforced their dominance in North America with a 26-12 win over USA, while Russia did likewise for Europe, giving Spain a lesson in simple efficient sevens on their way to a 29-0 win. Finally New Zealand predictably saw off a brave Japanese effort. The Asian champions showed some superb passing phases, but New Zealand were always in control.

Cup: Semi-finals

Australia and Canada went first with a predictably tight game. Australia lead 7-5, Sharni Williams replying to an Canadian score just before half-time - the try, crucially, being converted. Six minutes of pressure finally told with a converted Kelly Russell try - and then a perfect restart put in Ashley Staecy try finished the game. The second semi-final was a rather more one-sided affair with New Zealand running out comfortable winners over Russia.

Cup: Finals

After Australia took a 12-0 lead, partly thanks to some poor Russian handling near their own line, Russia fought back with two Khamidova tries tieing the score at halftime. But Australia controlled second half, scored two more tries and took third place.

New Zealand opened the scoring when Winiata took the ball around the blindside of a scrum near the Candian line. A mistake with the restart gave Canada the initaitive and a great run from Kish took Canada deep into the New Zealand half, but the chances were not taken. New Zealand broke clear and McAlister scored, giving New Zealand a 10-0 lead at the break.

The second half opened with a break by McAlister opening up the Canadian defence, Winiata running onto the pass to score, and take a 15-0 lead. A few minutes later and a fourth try, again starting from a Canadian attack, but this time it was Woodman breaking away, running half the field, and scoring for 22-0. A few minutes later and it as the same again, this time Broughton breaking from her own 22 creating an opening for Blyde, and then from the final play of the game Broughton herself took the ball the length of the field to finish the game 36-0 to New Zealand.

The difference between the teams was the ability of New Zealand to convert half chances into points, while - despite having perhaps three quarters of the possession - Canada just could not convert that into scores.

Spain then took on Japan - an early opportunity to avenge their defeat on Day One - and an opportunity they took with avengence, having started this time with their strongest side.

Plate: Finals

A Brennan first-half hat-trick gave England a comfortable lead in the seventh place game against Japan, which was needed as the Japanese hammered on the English line thoughout the second period, pulling back two tries. A mistake-strewn performance by Spain then allowed the USA to take the Plate comfortably.
