Brazil qualify for Paris Olympics

Brazil have won yet another South American Sevens title. Since the first tournament in 2004, Brazil have won every competiition that they have entered, and have never lost a match.

This weekend in Montevideo was no different as Brazil sailed through the tournament, conceding only two tries – one to runners-up Argentina, and one to Chile (when Brazil had a player in the sinbin).

The tournament was played as a single seven team pool, three games on each day, and no final. And as is often the case the battle for second was the main interest, and this year that clearly went to Argentina who – Brazil aside – were significantly stronger than all other opponents. Quite why Argentina failed to take their place at the World Series qualification series in South Africa earlier this year remains a mystery as they impressed.

Paraguay – who did go to South Africa – were third, while former regional number two Colombia slipped to fourth, with just two wins in their six games. Only a draw against Paraguay kept them ahead of Uruguay and Chile, while Peru finished a disappointing last with six defeats.

Results:

Colombia 0-19 Argentina; Brazil 17-0 Peru; Chile 14-12 Uruguay; Brazil 17-5 Argentina; Chile 17-12 Peru; Uruguay 7-24 Paraguay; Colombia 34-7 Peru; Brazil 27-0 Paraguay; Argentina 52-0 Chile; Paraguay 14-14 Colombia; Peru 0-12 Uruguay; Paraguay 14-12 Chile; Argentina 43-0 Uruguay; Colombia 22-0 Chile; Peru 0-31 Argentina; Brazil 48-0 Uruguay; Paraguay 26-12 Peru; Brazil 45-7 Chile; Colombia 12-17 Uruguay; Paraguay 7-31 Argentina; Brazil 38-0 Colombia
