What was behind Russia's impressive performance last weekend in Madrid?

“During our training camps the team we have worked hard on our physical conditioning. Also, a lot of attention was paid to our passing technique of with our new coach, Graham Bentz. Plus a huge desire to return to play at the international level has had a very positive impact.”

Were the team's game shape quickly established?

“Not much time was spent before this tournament on team tactics, so we played as easily as possible, used old plays. The main difficulty was rather in our confidence about whether it would all work out because of such a long break. But all the girls played well! It was nice that the tournament was held in a very warm, almost family atmosphere. I liked how Vika Em and Masha Pogrebnyak made their debuts. I'm sure they will grow from tournament to tournament.”

When it comes to debutantes - is it possible, in your opinion, to achieve a fusion of youth and experience?

“The result speaks for itself! I can only say that I am very comfortable to work in our team.”

And what will the team work on in preparation for the second tournament in Spain?

“I think it's over team interactions. To build your attack into several phases and understand what is going on.”

Do you feel a burden of responsibility for your role as the "Russian missile", designed to cut through the defences of your rivals?

"I don't feel any weight on myself! I just get a huge pleasure from the fact that at this tournament I produced what is expected of me. It's nice when the team plays so that your only task is to run fast.”
