Singapore A defeat Malaysia Barbarians

Singapore tested their strength in depth recently with a challenge game against the Malaysia Barbarians. In a historic game the first ever at A level for Singapore, the game was a tight affair with the Malaysian Barbarians losing out 10-7.

Singapore A started the match well by putting pressure on their opponents in their half and their strong set-pieces put the Barbarians under lots of pressure early on. With outside centre Esther Phua making some super first half breaks.

Singapore took the lead the game when replacement scrum half, Samantha Teo, who too the place of captain Sim Chiew Hong due to injury, took advantage of a quick penalty inside the opposition 22 and passed to number 8 and vice-captain Lee Yitian Phin. Phin ran hard at the defenders and crashed over for a 5-0 lead.

Just before the break the Malaysia Barbarians hit back with a quick try of their own which was converted and the Malaysia Barbarians were leading 7-5.

The second half started with Singapore A looking aggressive with their forwards keeping their attacking momentum and the back line making strong line breaks.In the 60th minute, Phin made a break after a turnover and touched down. The conversion was unsuccessful and Singapore A ended the game with a 10-7 lead.

Singapore will play Malaysia on Saturday October 3.
